I am Dr. Manish Barvaliya (M.B.B.S; M.D. Pharmacology) working as an Assistant Professor at Government Medical College, Bhavnagar, Gujarat. I attended the FFE event at IIM, Ahmadabad on 23rd February, 2014 for the first time. It was a great pleasure and wonderful experience for me. I came to know about the FFE in detail during this visit. It was a wonderful experience seeing the scholars getting scholarships and meeting the alumni scholars.
I got the scholarship from FFE for my H.S.C. and M.B.B.S curriculum (from 2001 to 2008). Upon completion of my 10th standard with 93.4%, I joined H.S.C. in science stream in Ahmedabad. My parents are not well educated and at that time my family income was Rs. 2,000 per month. In H.S.C., all my colleagues were attending coaching classes while I was not in a condition to do so. After 10th standard, I sent more than 20 applications in search of scholarship from different trusts but did not get any response. I started coaching neighborhood children along with doing my own study.
One of my neighbors Mr. Prahaladbhai Patel, took me to meet Mr. Manishbhai Vaghasia who works as a facilitator for FFE. He inquired about my condition and asked me to apply for the FFE scholarship. I applied and I got the scholarship from FFE for the first time. During my 12th standard, my Physics and Chemistry teachers Mr. R.H. Patel and Mr. R.S. Patel, gave me free coaching when they came to know about my condition. After passing H.S.C. with 90%, I got admission in M.B.B.S. at Govt. Medical College, Bhavnagar. I was getting expenses for my fees, books, and other fees from FFE every year.
I was not able to understand how my parents managed the home with Rs. 2000 per month. My father studied up to 5th standard and did different types of laborwork to manage the family. In my opinion, my mother was the best manager who managed everything so nicely. My parents compromised everything every time for my education. My younger brother got admission in B.E. Electrical and things became more complicated. As his H.S.C. percentage was below 80%, he was not getting the scholarship from any other trusts. So, I started taking scholarship from other trusts and also took loan without interest from another trust. After completion of final M.B.B.S, I got the stipend during internship and postgraduate curriculum that helped me to complete my postgraduation study.
During my studies, we had a lot of economic and social issues. But I was more focused on changing the future. I completed my studies and started my career in February 2013 as Assistant Professor in the same college where I studied. I now teach medical students and I also look to the safety issues of medicine at our hospital and involve myself in health research. I have 23 scientific publications in PubMed indexed journals and I guided 2 medical students for research project under Indian Council of Medical Research, New Delhi. I feel proud and obliged to share all these with you as FFE is one of the boons in my life which made me what I am today. I am indebted to my family, my teachers and everyone who supported me.
I stayed in touch regularly with my facilitator after my studies. I am currently helping two of my cousins in every way I can. I got the email from FFE 3 months back which I responded to. Further, I got the call from Madhumita Sharma, ManagerAlumni relations, FFE and it was my pleasure to be in direct touch with FFE. She informed me about an event which I attended.
I feel every difficulty has a solution as long as one remains focused. Thanking FFE alone is not sufficient; I will try to pay all my debts to make tomorrow's society better.
